I was browsing autotrader, and I noticed something interesting between 2 E90 M3 coupes; one a 2009 and one a 2012. can someone help answer this for me?
The question is about where the tachometers say the engine redlines.
for example; look at where redline is in the 2009 Performance Pack E90 M3 coupe:
.
as you can clearly see, the car relines at 8,250RPM.
.
.
.
Now, take a look at a tach from a 2012 Performance Pack E90 M3 coupe:
.
.
it’s redline is marked at 7,750 RPM.
.
.
.
That is the only difference between these two cars, and as you can tell they both have very similar mileage, so it’s not something that age causes. i’d greatly appreciate your help guys.

The bottom one is cold. They lower the redline at cold temp to protect the motor.

Ding ding ding! The E46 M3 did the same thing.

Even the E39 M5, too. Until the water and oil were hot enough, the tach would show a lower redline.

I think they both do that. but look at the top opne and notice how the car is warmed up? and the bottom one, the car is cold.

Yeah all the posters above me are correct. I have a 2011 E92 M3 and in the cold that bar on the right will sometimes go all the way up to 5. I have to let it idle some before I hit the highway or it runs really rough. It warms up pretty quick.
I have to take my car in to get a tire checked after a 3rd low tire warning. Swopped my winter/summer tires and the place that did it in Maryland I think had a learning disability.

Did it on the E39s too. Double edged sword - BMW was denying warranty claims because it records how you drive when the engines cold (hard starts, high revs, etc)
